- The Somme
Three newly-dug Graves, Connaught Cemetery, Thiepval, Autumn 2015

During road-widening in the preparation for the Centenary, French workmen uncovered the bodies of three British soldiers. One of was identified by his identity tag, a bespoke-made gift from his wife, as Sgt David Harkness Blakey of The Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. The 26 year old son of a miner from Gateshead, and father of three, he was last reported wounded in no-man's-land on July 1st, but his body was lost for 97 years. His funeral and that of the two unidentified soldiers, which took place with full military honours the morning after this photograph was taken, was attended by his granddaughter, great-granddaughter, two great-great-grandaughters, great-neice and two great-nephews, and was a deeply emotional occasion. The Somme reached across 100 years with extraordinary impunity.
