Caterpillar Valley, July 2016
Scene of the initial attack on Mametz Wood by the 38th Welsh Division on 7th July 1916. The Welsh advanced down the valley towards the wood, which is behind the viewpoint. They were caught by interlocking machine gun fire from within the wood itself, and from Flatiron Copse in 'Happy Valley'. The German defenders were the experienced Prussians of the Lehr Regiment, for the Welsh it was their baptism of fire. The attack left 400 Welsh dead here and in front of the wood, and the division was going to have to throw itself against the wood again, finally taking it after incurring 4000 casualties on 12th July.
