The base of a shell-shattered wall still visible in Lesboeufs, October 2015
There are very few man-made structures that survive the battle, at least above the surface. Continuous and intense artillery barrage from both sides virtually ground villages and farmsteads to powder, or at best piles of shattered rubble, and post-war clearance and rebuilding was comprehensive. However, the sharp of eye can occasionally spot sights such as this, a small area of brickwork exposed by erosion on the bank of a sunken lane on the edge of the village.
