Beaucourt viewed from the Ancre heights, Somme, March 2015
The rear of the infamous Schwaben Redoubt lies just beyond the left-hand frame of this photograph. The British advance in this sector remained limited - the final German line of November 1916 would have crossed through where this line of poplars now stands on the brow of the slope. The Battle of the Ancre Heights, of which this location marks the left flank, was one of the final, faltering acts of the the great Somme offensive.
